Toll Tangle: Linkt Admits to Widespread Overcharging, Pledges Full Refunds for Victorian Motorists

Tens of thousands of Victorian motorists are poised to receive refunds from toll operator Linkt after the company acknowledged a systemic error led to extensive overcharging across its network, impacting an estimated 1.4 million trips on major arteries like CityLink and the West Gate Tunnel. This admission highlights a classification flaw that may have incorrectly billed drivers for as long as a decade.

Transurban Apologises for Billing Blunder

Transurban, the parent company overseeing Linkt's operations, has issued an apology to its clientele via its official website. The company confirmed it is now undertaking a comprehensive review of charges from the past ten years to rectify these long-standing discrepancies. "Customers have got a reasonable expectation we get the bill right every time, and in this instance we've really let people down," stated Transurban spokesperson Chris Jackson during an interview with 774 ABC Melbourne radio.

Scope of the Systemic Error

The billing irregularity primarily stems from Linkt's systems incorrectly identifying vehicle classifications, leading to differential and often inflated charges. Approximately 90,000 individual vehicles are believed to have been affected by this flaw. Mr. Jackson clarified that while the scale is significant, this issue impacts "less than 1 per cent of trips" across their extensive network.

Refunds, Waivers, and Compensation Promised

Linkt has committed to providing full refunds to all overcharged drivers, with adjustments made for inflation to ensure equitable restitution. Crucially, motorists who were inadvertently undercharged due to the same systemic mistake will not be required to pay back the difference. Furthermore, the company intends to issue an additional compensation payment to acknowledge the "significant inconvenience that this has clearly caused."

"Customers don't need to do anything. We'll be in contact with them if they have been overcharged," Mr. Jackson assured the public, indicating a proactive approach to rectifying the errors. Linkt has also pledged to enhance its classification processes to bolster accuracy and prevent similar incidents from recurring.

Past Issues and Customer Contact

This incident follows a similar controversy just a year prior, when Transurban was compelled to apologise to Canberra drivers after admitting to erroneous charges, including billing for trips that were never actually taken. While Linkt will directly contact affected individuals, drivers who suspect their vehicle may have been incorrectly classified are encouraged to reach out to the company directly on 1300 381 570 or complete an online inquiry form.
