Melbourne Teen Faces Court Amidst Shocking Forced Marriage Abduction Allegations
An 18-year-old man from Melbourne has been remanded in custody after facing court on a raft of serious charges, including the alleged abduction of a teenage girl near a school with the purported intent of forcing her into marriage without her consent.
Ayom Deng appeared before the Melbourne Magistrates' Court late on Wednesday, where details of the shocking allegations emerged through court documents. He did not apply for bail and is set to reappear for a committal mention on September 23.
Disturbing Allegations Unfold
Police allege the 17-year-old victim was approaching a school in Melbourne's south-east at approximately 8:30 AM on Friday when she was confronted by a male. It is further alleged that she was then forcibly placed into a vehicle, which subsequently fled the scene. Investigators believe Mr. Deng was the driver of this vehicle.
Following an urgent investigation, Mr. Deng was apprehended in Melbourne's west around 10:00 AM on Wednesday.
Charges and Court Proceedings
Charge sheets released on Thursday confirm that Mr. Deng faces five specific offences. The most serious includes abducting the girl "with intent on marrying… without her consent." Other charges are kidnapping, false imprisonment, and unlawfully detaining her "against her will." Significantly, he is also accused of committing an indictable offence while out on bail for previous matters, and driving on a highway without a valid driver's licence or permit.
During the court appearance, Mr. Deng's defence lawyer informed the court that his client has a diagnosed Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and noted that this was not his first time in custody. The lawyer also highlighted Mr. Deng's perceived vulnerability due to his age and physical appearance.
Co-Accused Also Charged
The investigation has also led to charges against a 15-year-old boy, who is alleged to be Mr. Deng's co-accused. He has been charged with abduction and is scheduled to appear before a children's court at a later, unspecified date.
The community awaits further developments as the legal proceedings continue in this deeply concerning case.
