Arson Attack Engulfs Richmond Shopping Strip, Devastating Multiple Businesses

A violent arson attack has left a trail of destruction through inner Melbourne's vibrant Victoria Street in Richmond, with flames engulfing multiple businesses in the early hours of Monday morning. The incident began when an unknown offender or offenders used a vehicle to ram a shopfront before deliberately setting the building alight.

Massive Fire Response

Emergency services were alerted to the blaze around 4:15 AM, rapidly deploying an extensive firefighting contingent. Over 80 firefighters, supported by nearly 30 fire trucks, battled the intense fire. Fire Rescue Victoria Commander Sarah Lostia reported that the flames and thick smoke spread rapidly through the building, impacting at least 10 businesses. "In the building itself, there are approximately 10 businesses that have been affected," Commander Lostia stated, noting that power had also been isolated to surrounding residences as a safety precaution.

Widespread Disruption and Investigation

The ram-raid and subsequent fire caused significant disruption, forcing the closure of Victoria Street to all traffic, including trams, between Church and Hoddle streets for much of the morning. Thick smoke from the inferno billowed for approximately a kilometre in every direction, prompting a community safety alert from VicEmergency.

Police have established a crime scene and launched a full investigation into the arson attack. A white vehicle was seen partially embedded in the damaged storefront, a stark testament to the force of the ram-raid. Fortunately, authorities confirmed that no one was inside the targeted business at the time of the incident. The storefronts on either side of the main affected business are also understood to have sustained damage.

Community Impact

The event sent shockwaves through the local business community. Malcolm Swansson, who was en route to his neighbouring business, expressed his dismay. "It's a little bit disconcerting to see that and not be able to get down there and see if it's actually our business or not," he said, highlighting the immediate uncertainty faced by business owners. The street closure also raised concerns about the impact on dozens of customers and the wider economic ripple effect on the usually bustling strip.
