Arson Suspected in Dual Early Morning Blazes Across Melbourne's Northwest
Emergency services were stretched thin in Melbourne's northwest early Thursday morning as fire crews battled two separate, suspicious house fires that ignited just minutes apart in neighbouring suburbs.
The incidents, one in Keilor Downs and another in Taylors Lakes, have prompted concurrent arson investigations by local police, though authorities are not currently linking the two events.
Keilor Downs Blaze Engulfs Empty Home
The first alarm was raised around 2:45 AM, when calls reporting a house fire directed Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) crews to a property on Morecambe Crescent in Keilor Downs. More than 20 firefighters swiftly responded to the single-storey brick residence.
Despite the rapid response, the blaze caused significant damage to the property. Fortunately, nobody was inside the house at the time of the fire, which was brought under control within approximately 30 minutes. Police have confirmed the fire is being treated as suspicious, and an investigation into its origin is now well underway.
Taylors Lakes Property Targeted Minutes Later
Just 15 minutes after the initial report from Keilor Downs, emergency services were called to a second incident less than two kilometres away, on Pindari Avenue in Taylors Lakes. Upon arrival, crews discovered two vehicles in a carport fully engulfed in flames, with the blaze rapidly spreading to the adjoining house.
Three residents inside the Taylors Lakes home were forced to evacuate to safety, narrowly escaping harm. Firefighters worked diligently to contain the inferno, successfully preventing it from spreading to nearby properties. This fire is also being treated as suspicious, with a separate police investigation now active.
Community On Edge as Investigations Continue
The close proximity and timing of the two fires have naturally raised concerns within the local community. While Victoria Police have stated they are not currently treating the incidents as connected, both remain subjects of active arson investigations. The nature of the fires and the damage sustained suggest a deliberate act in each case.
Authorities are urging anyone with information regarding either incident to come forward.
