Councils call for flexibility on mandatory glass recycling bins
Councils are rallying against a requirement for purple-lid glass recycling bins to be rolled out to all homes by mid-next year. The Victorian government says it will work with councils to finalise rules for household waste and recycling services ahead of the July 2027 deadline.
A growing number of Victorian councils are pushing back against the state government's plan to make kerbside glass recycling bins mandatory, citing concerns over cost and the one-size-fits-all approach.
The scheme, which aims to reduce glass contamination in mixed recycling and divert more material from landfill, requires councils to roll out purple-lidded glass-recycling bins to all homes by mid-next year.
Concerns over cost and implementation
The Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) argues that local authorities are best placed to decide how waste is collected and recycled in their communities.
