Geelong Man's 'Russian Roulette' Driving Claims Young Life, Judge Slams Reckless History
A drug-fueled driver who boasted about his dangerous driving on video faces sentencing after causing a catastrophic crash that killed a 12-year-old girl and injured her family. Jordan Kenyon pleaded guilty to culpable driving causing death following the tragic January 2024 collision.
A Victorian judge has likened the actions of a drug-fueled motorist to playing "Russian roulette" after he caused a devastating collision on the outskirts of Geelong that killed a 12-year-old girl.
Jordan Kenyon, 31, has pleaded guilty to several driving offences, including culpable driving causing death, which carries a maximum 20-year prison sentence. The court heard Kenyon possessed a lengthy history of criminal driving and was on parole when he crashed into a car carrying a family of four near Stonehaven on January 3, 2024.
Tragic High-Speed Collision
The crash resulted in the immediate death of 12-year-old Mia Rossiter. Her mother Danica, father Paul, and seven-year-old sister all sustained severe injuries requiring ongoing medical treatment. Kenyon's brother, who was in the front passenger seat, was also critically injured.
During a pre-sentence hearing, County Court Judge Michael Tinney criticized Kenyon's decision to get behind the wheel after consuming the drug GHB. "If he wants to play Russian Roulette he should do it in a room on his own, not that I recommend that," Judge Tinney said. "It was a matter of time before he killed someone and the Rossiters had the unlucky ticket. It could have been any one of us."
Shocking Phone Footage Played to Court
Kenyon was released on parole in mid-2023 and was wearing an electronic ankle monitoring bracelet at the time. He had previously been jailed for six years following a 2019 high-speed chase in Geelong, during which he drove a stolen vehicle at speeds of up to 170km/h.
Judge Tinney questioned why Kenyon had not been returned to custody before the fatal incident, given his dangerous behavior in the weeks prior. The court was shown phone footage filmed by Kenyon on December 14, 2023, showing him steering a vehicle with his legs on the wrong side of the road while holding a phone in one hand and a can of bourbon whiskey in the other.
"I am the best f***ing designated drunk driver in the world!" Kenyon boasted in the video before taking a drink. "Oncoming car, oh yes I love it … Shall we kill these c***s?" he added, followed by, "I will crash into a pole tonight."
On the day of the crash, Kenyon took GHB and performed burnouts in Geelong. Later, with his brother in the vehicle, he reached speeds of approximately 150km/h on the Hamilton Highway before losing control and colliding with the Rossiter family's Holden Barina as they drove home from dinner.
Grieving Family Confronts Driver
Mia's father, Paul Rossiter, who attended court with walking sticks and a medical boot, read a victim impact statement describing his daughter. "Mia was a beautiful, kind caring girl who was looking forward to becoming a teenager," he said. "Mia was bright, loyal and loved her animals."
Mr. Rossiter then addressed Kenyon directly in the courtroom. "You and your stupid actions have taken an amazing young human from this earth," he said. "I hope hell's a shit place and you rot there when you arrive."
Mia's mother, Danica Rossiter, wept as she explained how the loss of her child had stripped the joy from their daily lives. "Until you have lost your own flesh and blood, you don't know how this feels," she said.
Defense barrister Luke Barker acknowledged that Kenyon had not learned from his past convictions. "It's a stupid, foolhardy, cavalier, nonsensical decision to have driven that night," he told the court.
Kenyon, who has been held in custody since January 2024, is scheduled to be sentenced on July 29.
