Mildura River Skull Mystery: Forensics Turn to Carbon Dating After Initial Tests Fail
A year after a partial human skull was discovered on the banks of the Murray River in Mildura, police are turning to advanced carbon dating at the Australian National University. With initial forensic tests proving inconclusive, investigators admit the identity of the remains may never be known.
A year after a shocking discovery on the banks of the Murray River, the mystery surrounding a partial human skull found near Mildura remains unsolved, prompting investigators to turn to highly specialized scientific testing.
The grim find was made by a passerby walking near the entrance of the Apex Riverbeach Holiday Park. The partial skull was found partially buried in the riverbank, sparking an immediate forensic investigation. While early assessments by anthropologists ruled out the possibility that the remains are ancient or historical, detectives have so far been unable to establish who the skull belonged to, or how it ended up there.
Advanced Testing at ANU
Following the discovery, the skull was sent to Newcastle for specialized forensic analysis. However, NSW Police Detective Inspector Matt Sippel confirmed that because the remains are incomplete, those initial tests yielded no definitive answers.
"We haven't been able to identify the origin of that skull and the date or the age of the skull," Detective Inspector Sippel said. "What we'll do now is have that sent to the Australian National University where radiocarbon dating testing is to occur."
Despite exhaustive searches of missing persons databases and localized physical searches at the time of the discovery, police have hit a dead end due to a lack of physical evidence. Investigators remain hopeful that the carbon dating process at ANU will provide a tighter timeframe, which could narrow down search parameters within missing persons registries.
A Scientific Race Against Time
Former homicide detective Charlie Bezzina, who spent years investigating cold cases, noted that mysteries of this nature present immense hurdles for law enforcement. Because the Murray River spans thousands of kilometers, tracing where water-bound remains may have originated is a monumental task.
"Your first point of call certainly is missing persons records, but given the length of the Murray River, it makes it quite difficult," Bezzina explained. "You'd have to really expand it to the whole direction and length of the river."
Bezzina added that because investigators are dealing with only a partial skull, traditional investigative methods like door-knocking or witness interviews are virtually useless. Instead, the case relies almost entirely on forensic science.
"You're relying on science quite significantly through an anthropologist to try to determine the gender of the skull, dental records, and any DNA," he said, noting that if teeth are present, investigators can distribute X-rays to dentists across Victoria and New South Wales in hopes of a match.
Will the Mystery Ever Be Solved?
Ultimately, all scientific findings will be compiled into a report for the Coroner. However, Bezzina warned that the public must prepare for the possibility that the skull may never be identified.
"It may remain a mystery forever and a day," Bezzina said. "But they might be lucky enough to identify the skull and hopefully have some respite for the family."
