A 33-year-old woman has been arrested and charged in Mildura after police intercepted an illegal drug importation en route to the regional Victorian city.

Victoria Police allege the woman attempted to import about 500ml of 1,4-Butanediol, also known as bute, which is described as "a harmful substance that is linked to sexual assaults and overdoses".

The woman's arrest was part of a multi-agency investigation, with the drugs intercepted at Melbourne Airport in June.

Detectives from the Mildura Divisional Response Unit arrested the woman at a Mildura address on Friday morning.

She was charged with the Commonwealth offence of importing a marketable quantity of a border-controlled substance.
