A disturbing mass die-off of birds at a popular lake in Bendigo has sparked fears of H5N1 bird flu, with wildlife rescuers scrambling to respond to the crisis.

Almost 60 birds, including ibises and water hens, have been found dead near an island on Lake Weeroona, with many more exhibiting strange behaviour. Bendigo Wildlife Rescue's Avery Barnett-Dacey said volunteers had located birds that were unable to walk properly, with some displaying a head wobble and a 'skyward gaze'.
