Somerton Man Mystery Nears Resolution as Police Finalize Coronial Report
A 78-year enigma surrounding the identity of the Somerton Man may soon be officially put to rest, with South Australian Police indicating their report for the coroner is in its final stages. Professor Derek Abbott, who has extensively researched the case, revealed that authorities have informed him the comprehensive report is expected to be submitted within the next two weeks.
DNA Evidence Points to Clear Identity
Professor Abbott, a prominent Adelaide University academic, stated he is "99.99 per cent sure" that the unidentified man found on Somerton Beach on December 1, 1948, is Carl "Charles" Webb. His conclusion is based on extensive DNA analysis, which he conducted using hairs from a plaster bust of the deceased. These samples were meticulously compared with genetic material provided by family members through the genealogy website Ancestry.com.
Coroner's Findings Anticipated by Year's End
The Somerton Man's remains were exhumed from Adelaide's West Terrace Cemetery in 2021 as part of ongoing investigations. Professor Abbott, who publicly announced his findings in 2022, expressed confidence that the police's forthcoming report will align with his conclusions. "Assuming there's nothing unusual, it's beyond reasonable doubt that we've got the right guy," he remarked, referencing the possibility of extremely rare circumstances like unknown identical twins.
Once the police submit their findings to the coroner, the coroner will review the evidence. This process could lead to the official conclusion of the case and the presentation of findings, potentially by the end of the year. Professor Abbott noted that while the police investigation has taken five years since the exhumation, this is understandable given the complexity and the typical prioritization of more pressing forensic cases by law enforcement agencies.
Focus Remains on Identity, Not Cause of Death
Authorities have confirmed the investigation is complex and ongoing, with SAPOL stating, "Once completed SAPOL will provide a report to the Coroner." It is understood that the Somerton Man's remains are currently held at the Forensic Science Centre in the Adelaide CBD. Professor Abbott explained that determining the cause of death after so many decades is highly improbable, particularly without clear physical evidence such as severe trauma. Consequently, the police investigation has primarily focused on definitively confirming the individual's identity.
Family Awaits Official Closure
Stuart Webb, believed to be a descendant of the Somerton Man's brother, expressed understanding and acceptance of the lengthy investigation process. "I appreciate police have priorities they have to deal with — that's absolutely fine," he commented. The potential for the family to decide on reburial arrangements, either in Adelaide or closer to family in Melbourne, now hinges on the coroner's final determinations. The Somerton Man's legacy continues to captivate the public imagination, fueled by the mysterious clues left behind, including the enigmatic "Tamam Shud" inscription and a coded message found in a poetry book.
