The Sunshine community is enveloped in grief following the tragic death of a beloved local shop owner who was fatally assaulted after stepping in to stop a robbery. Van Viet Truong, 60, spent his final days in an induced coma before succumbing to his injuries on Wednesday evening surrounded by family, some of whom had rushed to his bedside from Vietnam.

The tragedy has sparked an outpouring of grief across Melbourne's west, while the legal proceedings against five teenagers allegedly involved in the incident have begun to unfold in the Children's Court.

A Heroic Intervention Ends in Tragedy

The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon on Hampshire Road, a busy shopping precinct in Sunshine. Police prosecutors told the court that Mr Truong, the long-time owner of Hong Hung Asian Grocery, acted courageously alongside two other men to prevent a group of youths from stealing clothing from the nearby Diamond Valley store, located just two doors down from his own business.

According to witness accounts presented in court, the situation quickly escalated when the group turned on Mr Truong. He was allegedly dragged to the ground, with one witness reporting a distinct 'cracking sound' as the 60-year-old’s head struck the concrete pavement. Despite onlookers begging the group to stop, the assault continued until a member of the group shouted for the others to run.

Emergency services rushed Mr Truong to the hospital with severe, unsurvivable head injuries, where he was placed in a medically induced coma. He passed away five days later.

Legal Proceedings and Strict Bail Conditions

Police initially charged five youths in connection with the fatal confrontation. In the latest court hearing, a Children's Court judge granted bail to three of the accused: a 12-year-old boy and two 14-year-old girls. The trio faces charges of affray, violent disorder, and intentionally causing serious injury.

Under their strict bail conditions, the three youths must adhere to rigorous curfews and are prohibited from contacting one another. Meanwhile, a 15-year-old boy, who has been charged with manslaughter, remains in custody at the Cherry Creek Youth Justice Centre. Charges of affray and intentionally causing injury against a fifth suspect, a 13-year-old boy, are expected to be withdrawn.

The court also heard that police have collected DNA samples from all five youths, though a legal determination on whether these samples can be used as evidence will be made later this month. The prosecution has been granted two months to compile their brief of evidence.

Tributes Flow for a Local Hero

Outside the shuttered doors of Hong Hung Asian Grocery, a vibrant memorial of flowers, incense, and cards continues to grow. Mr Truong had operated the local grocery store with his wife for nearly 30 years and was actively planning his retirement.

Local business owners and residents have hailed him as a protector of the high street. Victorian Premier Ben Carroll was among those who visited the scene to pay respects, offering condolences to Mr Truong's grieving family members who described him as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who always put his community first.

The bailed youths are scheduled to return to court later this month as the investigation continues.
