McLaren junior Leonardo Fornaroli is slated for his second Grand Prix weekend appearance of the 2024 season, taking over Oscar Piastri’s MCL38 for the first free practice session at the Hungaroring. The highly-regarded Italian, a reigning F2 champion, previously piloted Lando Norris’s car during FP1 at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya last month. This weekend’s outing is particularly significant, as McLaren arrives in Budapest armed with a substantial package of upgrades, aiming to further close the gap on rivals like Mercedes and a strong-performing Ferrari.

McLaren management has expressed considerable admiration for Fornaroli’s potential, with team principal Andrea Stella openly discussing opportunities for the 21-year-old elsewhere on the grid. Speculation has linked Fornaroli to a potential second seat at Haas, where Esteban Ocon’s long-term future remains a subject of ongoing discussion.

Haas and Alpine Also Field Young Talent

Haas will also rotate its roster for FP1, with Toyota protégé Ryo Hirakawa stepping in to replace Oliver Bearman at the Hungaroring. Hirakawa’s appearance marks another significant opportunity for a promising driver to gain top-tier F1 experience.

Meanwhile, Alpine reserve driver Paul Aron is set for his third FP1 session of the year.
