Federal Police Address Online Threat Ahead of Indian PM's High-Profile Australian Visit

Australian federal authorities have moved swiftly to address an online threat directed at Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is expected to arrive in the country later this week for a series of high-level engagements.

Investigators from the federal police service confirmed they identified and subsequently interviewed an individual responsible for an online death threat against Prime Minister Modi. The incident, which occurred on July 3, led to a formal warning being issued to a young person involved.

"Following a thorough assessment of the matter, the young person was issued a formal warning," a spokesperson for the federal police stated. "There is no current or impending risk to the community related to this incident." The spokesperson further emphasised that all suspected criminal behaviour, including threats and harassment, is taken with utmost seriousness and will be rigorously investigated.

The security measures come just days before Prime Minister Modi's much-anticipated visit to Australia. The leader, who has served as India's Prime Minister since 2014, is scheduled to travel to Melbourne this week as part of an official diplomatic tour.

His itinerary includes a significant annual leaders' summit with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, designed to strengthen the strategic partnership between the two nations. Additionally, Prime Minister Modi is slated to make a public appearance at a major community event at Marvel Stadium, anticipating a large turnout from the Indian diaspora.

Prime Minister Albanese has underscored the critical importance of the bilateral relationship. "The Australia-India relationship has never been more consequential," he remarked, highlighting its role in fostering "peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region." He expressed his eagerness to further deepen the comprehensive partnership during the upcoming discussions.
