Family of 71yo motorcyclist killed on Victorian highway calls for no 'political agendas'

Family members of 71-year-old Peter "Tiki" Mason, who died after his motorcycle reportedly struck a pothole on a regional Victorian highway, say they are heartbroken at the "sudden and devastating loss".

The family has released a statement saying Mr Mason was "much more than the circumstances of his death".

Peter "Tiki" Mason died while riding along a stretch of the Western Highway near Trawalla on Sunday.

Police are still investigating the incident but said "emergency services responded to reports a motorcycle had struck a pothole and lost control".

The family of Mr Mason said he was "a much-loved member of our family and a friend to many," the statement said. "His loss has left an enormous hole in our lives, and we are struggling to come to terms with a life taken far too soon."

Family's plea

"We are aware of the public interest surrounding the circumstances of Peter's death, including the condition of the road where the incident occurred," the statement said.

"If, through the appropriate processes, changes are identified that could prevent another family from experiencing this devastation, we sincerely hope something positive can come from Peter's death."

"However, these matters should be dealt with by the appropriate authorities."

The family said they did not want Mr Mason's death to be used to promote "political agendas", and asked that no one speak on behalf of the family or "claim to represent our views".

"We are deeply grateful to everyone who has reached out with condolences, support and memories of Peter," their statement said. "Knowing how many people loved and cared for him brings us some comfort during this unimaginable time."

"Please remember him for the life he lived, the people he loved, and the memories he leaves behind."

Road safety concerns

Friends have remembered Mr Mason as an "absolute legend".
