A devastating early morning collision on the Hume Highway near Breadalbane has tragically claimed the life of a truck driver, igniting a fiery inferno that closed a critical transport route for hours. The incident, involving two heavy vehicles, has brought renewed focus to safety concerns for heavy vehicle operators on the busy highway.
Tragic Collision Details Emerge
Emergency services rushed to the scene just after 4:00 AM in Breadalbane, approximately 32 kilometres south-west of Goulburn, following reports of a severe crash involving a road train and a B-double truck. Local police confirmed that the driver of the B-double truck died at the scene. The identity of the deceased driver has not yet been formally released, and authorities are working to notify their next of kin.
Initial investigations by NSW Police indicate that the B-double truck experienced mechanical issues and broke down in lane one. A spokesperson for NSW Police, Superintendent Linda Bradbury, stated that the 31-year-old male driver of the B-double had reportedly exited his vehicle, activated hazard warnings, and communicated his breakdown to other drivers via CB radio. Shortly thereafter, a road train carrying highly flammable aerosol products collided with the rear of the stationary B-double, which was transporting groceries.
The impact of the collision caused both heavy vehicles to erupt into flames. The driver of the road train, also 31, sustained minor head injuries and was transported to Yass Hospital in a stable condition for mandatory testing following the incident.
Emergency Response and Highway Closure
The fiery aftermath of the crash necessitated an immediate and extensive response from emergency services. The Hume Highway, a vital artery connecting Sydney and Melbourne, was completely closed in both directions for several hours, causing significant traffic disruptions as clean-up crews worked to manage the scene. Fire and Rescue NSW crews battled the intense blaze throughout the morning and into the afternoon.
Acting Superintendent Peter Murray from Fire and Rescue NSW confirmed that as late as 1:00 PM on Friday, three fire trucks remained on scene, actively monitoring and extinguishing residual fires. “The fire continues to smoulder, and firefighters remain on scene to ensure its complete extinguishment and manage any hotspots,” he stated, highlighting the challenging nature of containing fires involving large vehicles and their diverse cargo. All lanes on the Hume Highway have since reopened, though clean-up operations, including the removal of debris and hazardous materials, are expected to continue for an extended period.
Ongoing Investigation and Broader Safety Concerns
Police have launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash, and a report will be prepared for the coroner. Authorities are urging anyone who witnessed the collision or has dashcam footage relevant to the incident to come forward and assist with inquiries by contacting Crime Stoppers.
Superintendent Bradbury also acknowledged a concerning trend of incidents involving heavy vehicles on the Hume Highway, particularly along the stretch between Yass and Goulburn. “We have had several incidents within heavy motor vehicles on the Hume Highway between Yass and Goulburn,” she noted. “NSW Police conduct regular operations in the area to ensure a reduction in road trauma.”
In response to these concerns, police are actively collaborating with partner agencies, including NSW Transport and the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator. This partnership aims to thoroughly understand the underlying causes behind the recent spate of heavy vehicle incidents and to implement strategies to enhance road safety for all users. Superintendent Bradbury concluded with a message of support and caution for the trucking community: “My message for heavy vehicle drivers is thank you for what you do, but please ensure that you’re fully rested, no distractions, and that you keep safe while you do a great job.”
