Man arrested after attempted carjacking with axe in Melbourne's north
A 29-year-old man was arrested after allegedly attempting to carjack a vehicle with an axe during a multi-vehicle collision in Melbourne's north. The suspect was detained by passers-by and taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
A dramatic scene unfolded in Melbourne's north early yesterday morning when a 29-year-old man allegedly attempted to carjack a vehicle while armed with an axe during a multi-vehicle collision.
Police were called to reports of an eight-vehicle collision at the intersection of Sydney Road and Bolinda Road about 7am. Officers were told one of the drivers involved in the collision, a man from Altona North, was armed with an axe and attempted a carjacking.
"He was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries under police guard," a police spokesperson said.
Police say a vehicle struck the alleged carjacker and then passers-by detained him in a nearby side street, until police arrived and took him into custody.
No-one else was injured, police said. Officers want any witnesses with footage or information of the incident to contact Crime Stoppers, to assist with their investigation.
