Melbourne Tram Stabbing: Woman Seriously Injured in Random Attack

A woman was seriously injured in a random stabbing attack on a Melbourne tram on Tuesday. The 51-year-old victim was travelling on the route 1 tram on Eastern Road in South Melbourne when a man allegedly lunged at her with a kitchen knife.

A 51-year-old woman was seriously injured in a random stabbing attack on a Melbourne tram on Tuesday.

The incident occurred on the route 1 tram on Eastern Road in South Melbourne, when a man allegedly lunged at the woman with a kitchen knife about midday.

"The tram immediately came to a stop just off Kings Way, with police descending on the area and arresting the man in front of dozens of onlookers."

Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with footage showing an ambulance rushing into oncoming traffic to reach the woman as police pinned the man down to arrest him.

The victim, who had been travelling with her dog, was tended to by paramedics before being taken to hospital with a stab wound to the neck.

Police will interview a 37-year-old man of no fixed address over the alleged assault.
