Wodonga Raiders to Redraw $70,000 Raffle After Eligibility Breach

A significant fundraising raffle hosted by the Wodonga Raiders Football and Netball Club is set for a redraw next week, following an order from the Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission (VGCCC).

The popular Ovens and Murray League club, situated near the Victorian-NSW border, had successfully sold 2,500 tickets at $100 each for its major prize — a $70,000 utility vehicle. The initial draw, conducted via social media livestream on June 6, was intended to bolster the club's finances through community support.

However, complications arose shortly after the draw when it was revealed that the winner of the grand prize was a committee member, a situation directly contravening the raffle's explicit terms and conditions. These conditions clearly excluded committee members, individuals directly involved in the raffle's organization, and their immediate relatives from participating.

The discovery prompted the club to refer the matter to the VGCCC, the state's regulatory body for gambling and casino activities. A spokesperson for the VGCCC confirmed the necessity of a redraw, stating, "A redraw is necessary to ensure compliance with Victorian raffle requirements." They further emphasized that organizations holding raffles, particularly those with high-value prizes, must operate under specific permits and adhere strictly to their conditions.

Wodonga Raiders President Zennon McCarty acknowledged the oversight, explaining that the ineligible entry "just slipped by us." The club has confirmed the redraw will take place in its clubrooms on July 16. Importantly, no additional tickets will be sold, and all tickets originally purchased, excluding those that have been refunded, will be entered into the new draw. Some refunds were processed after the initial incident.

In the wake of the eligibility issue, the original livestream of the draw has been removed from the club's social media channels, though promotional materials remain online, advertising the significant prize.
