A 42-year-old woman has died after being found with critical injuries on a road near Ballarat in the early hours of this morning. Victoria Police said the woman, who has not been identified, was found by a passer-by on Remembrance Drive in Cardigan at about 2:10am.

The woman was flown to hospital, but later died. Police said she may have been lying on the road at the time she was struck by a truck or another vehicle.

The two-lane road where the incident occurred has a speed limit of 80 kilometres an hour. Officers found debris at the scene that they said could indicate a truck was involved in the incident.
