Mildura Base Public Hospital (MBPH), a cornerstone employer and vital healthcare provider in Victoria's north-west, is navigating a significant leadership transition following the sudden departure of its Chief Executive Officer, Terry Welch.

Mr. Welch, who assumed the top executive position in September 2020, played a pivotal role in guiding the hospital through its complex transition from private to public ownership. Staff at MBPH were informed of his immediate exit via an internal email from the board of directors yesterday, though no specific reasons for his departure were provided.

A Tenure of Transformation

During his time at MBPH, Mr. Welch was widely acknowledged for his leadership during a period of substantial change, successfully steering the institution into its current public status. Before his tenure in Mildura, his extensive career in healthcare leadership included five years as CEO of Maryborough District Health Service in Victoria's Central Goldfields and another five years in a similar capacity at Yarrawonga Health in Victoria's north. His contributions to the sector were recognized nationally when he received an honorary mention as a runner-up for CEO of the Year at the 2018 Australian Healthcare Week awards, underscoring his track record of dedicated service and administrative excellence.

The hospital's board, in their communication to staff, acknowledged Mr. Welch's efforts, stating he had "led the health service through a period of significant change" throughout his term. However, the lack of detail surrounding his sudden departure has prompted questions within the community and among staff.

Interim Leadership and Official Statements

In the wake of Mr. Welch's departure, Matthew Jukes has been appointed as the interim Chief Executive Officer. Mr. Jukes brings recent experience to the role, having served as acting chief executive officer for 12 months, and will now guide the hospital as the board begins its search for a permanent successor.
