Major Fraud Probe Hits Greater Shepparton City Council, Seven Arrested

Seven individuals have been apprehended by authorities as part of a significant and ongoing investigation into alleged fraudulent activities connected to a local council and a Shepparton-based business. The arrests stem from a direct referral by the Greater Shepparton City Council itself, after internal financial and governance processes flagged concerning discrepancies.

Detectives from the Shepparton Crime Investigation Unit executed several warrants across Shepparton on June 17, leading to the arrests of the seven men. The individuals, aged between 36 and 55, were subsequently interviewed by police. Following their interviews, all seven were released pending further inquiries as the complex investigation continues.

Council Initiated Investigation into Internal Allegations

The alleged fraudulent conduct under scrutiny is believed to have occurred between 2022 and 2026. Greater Shepparton City Council's Chief Executive Officer, Fiona Le Gassick, confirmed the council's proactive role in bringing the matter to light. She stated that a small number of council employees have been involved in the police inquiry, which arose directly from concerns identified internally through the council's own robust governance and financial oversight.

“Council identified concerns through its internal governance and financial processes and took the decision to refer the matter to police, consistent with our obligations and our commitment to accountability and transparency,” Ms Le Gassick detailed in a statement. This referral underscores the council's commitment to upholding the highest standards of conduct and ensuring public trust.

Ongoing Police Investigation Limits Further Comment

Given the sensitive and ongoing nature of the police investigation, the council has indicated it is not in a position to make any further statements at this time. However, Ms Le Gassick reaffirmed the council's dedication to its primary mission. “Council remains focused on supporting the Greater Shepparton community and on upholding the high standards of conduct our community rightly expects,” she added.

The current phase of the investigation will involve extensive police work to gather further evidence and clarify the full scope of the alleged activities. The community awaits further updates as authorities delve deeper into the matter.
