Crows Dominate Bombers to Secure Top-Four Spot

The Adelaide Crows have surged into the AFL’s top four following an emphatic 72-point victory over a struggling Essendon side at Docklands Stadium on Sunday, running out 23.7 (145) to 11.7 (73) victors.

Key forward Riley Thilthorpe proved unstoppable for the Bombers' defence, setting the tone early with three opening-term majors before finishing with five goals and 10 marks. Izak Rankine was equally damaging with 23 disposals and three goals, while skipper Jordan Dawson led from the front with 30 disposals and nine clearances.

Essendon started strongly by kicking the first two goals of the match, but Matthew Nicks' side responded fiercely, slamming home five unanswered majors late in the first term to take full control. Debutants Oscar Ryan and Archie Ludowyke each provided magic moments by kicking their first career AFL goals, capping off a percentage-boosting afternoon for the visitors.

For Essendon, who remain anchored to the bottom of the ladder with a 2-18 record, power forward Peter Wright was a bright spark, kicking six goals. Demons Edge Suns in Carrara Thriller

In Sunday’s other thriller, Melbourne cemented its place in the top six with a hard-fought nine-point win over the Gold Coast Suns at Carrara Stadium, prevailing 18.6 (114) to 16.9 (105).

Demons captain Max Gawn produced an inspirational performance to lead his team over the line, recording 25 disposals, 10 marks, 33 hit-outs, and nine clearances. Harrison Petty and Jacob van Rooyen both slotted three goals, with Petty's major after the third-quarter siren proving pivotal in swinging momentum back to Melbourne.

The defeat marks Gold Coast's 10th consecutive loss despite strong individual efforts from John Noble (34 disposals) and Matt Rowell (30 disposals). Former Melbourne star Christian Petracca was held to 16 disposals in his first match against his old side.

The Demons now turn their attention to a blockbuster home clash against ladder-leading Fremantle at the MCG next week, while the Crows return home to host Richmond at Adelaide Oval.
