In a dramatic about-face that will delight Carlton supporters, interim coach Josh Fraser has officially informed the club's board that he wants the senior coaching position on a permanent basis. Having initially ruled himself out when taking the reins mid-season, Fraser’s extraordinary success over the last three months has prompted a change of heart.

Since stepping into the hot seat following Michael Voss's departure in mid-May, the 44-year-old has orchestrated one of the most remarkable turnarounds in recent AFL history. Fraser inherited a demoralised Blues outfit languishing near the bottom of the ladder with a grim one-win, eight-loss record. Under his stewardship, Carlton has surged back to life, winning 10 of their last 12 matches.

From Caretaker to Frontrunner

Fraser’s decision to throw his hat into the ring shapes up a competitive five-way battle for the coveted Carlton post. He joins Fremantle assistant Jaymie Graham, St Kilda assistant Corey Enright, Geelong assistant James Kelly, and Hawthorn’s head of development Daniel Giansiracusa on the final shortlist. However, with runs on the board, Fraser is now widely considered the frontrunner to secure the job full-time.

His candidacy has received strong support from within the club's four walls. Just two weeks ago, Carlton football boss Chris Davies publicly urged Fraser to apply, stating the club wanted him to put his hand up. Since that endorsement, the team has only gone from strength to strength, registering a dominant 76-point demolition of reigning premiers Brisbane, followed by a convincing 44-point victory over St Kilda.

A Historic Finals Charge

The Blues' late-season resurgence has put them on the verge of a wildcard finals berth. Carlton currently occupies 10th spot on the ladder, sitting two wins clear of 11th-placed St Kilda with just two rounds remaining in the home-and-away season. They face a crucial clash against the Western Bulldogs this Sunday, before a formidable final-round test against ladder-leaders Fremantle.

A veteran of 218 AFL games as a player—including 200 with Collingwood and 18 with the Gold Coast Suns—Fraser has built an impressive coaching apprenticeship. He began his coaching career with the Suns' state league side, before coaching both Carlton and Collingwood at VFL level. He returned to Princes Park ahead of this season as an assistant to Voss, setting the stage for his current history-making caretaker run.
