Dramatic Rescue in San Remo: Man Saved After 30-Metre Fall Down Rock Crevice
A 50-year-old man was rescued after falling 30 metres down a rock crevice in San Remo, south-east of Melbourne. Emergency services faced challenging conditions in accessing the site, but a multi-agency response ultimately led to a successful rescue.
A dramatic rescue effort unfolded on Saturday in San Remo, a coastal region approximately 120km south-east of Melbourne, after a man fell 30 metres down a rock crevice.
Emergency services were alerted to the incident on George Bass Coastal Walk at around 2:10pm, and responders were able to establish communication with the 50-year-old victim, who reported that he had broken his leg.
However, rescue teams faced significant challenges in accessing the site due to the difficult terrain and rising tide. An Ambulance Victoria helicopter was deployed, and a multi-agency response was coordinated, involving personnel from Fire Rescue Victoria, Country Fire Authority, the State Emergency Service (SES), Air Wing, Search and Rescue Squad, Life Saving Victoria, and Water Police.
As the situation developed, Search and Rescue officers entered the crevice to assess the man's condition. He was subsequently winched to safety at around 5:30pm.
The 50-year-old man was then flown to Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition, with non-life-threatening injuries.
