Man arrested over death of 21-year-old woman in Carlton

A 31-year-old man has been taken into custody in connection with the death of a 21-year-old woman in Carlton over the weekend.

The woman, Jayda Allen Bonner, was found dead at a block of flats shortly before 2am on Saturday. The 31-year-old man, who is from Carlton, handed himself in to police and is expected to be interviewed by detectives.

Investigators believe the parties were known to one another. A 60-year-old man was arrested on Saturday but was released pending further enquiries.

Victoria Police described Ms Bonner as a Yagera woman with family in Queensland. Her aunt, Kellie Carter-Bell, described her as a "gentle soul with a heart of gold".

"We begged for their help, and because we were ringing them and not Jayda, their attitude was, 'Well, what do you want us to do?'" Ms Carter-Bell said.

Victoria Police said the investigation into Ms Bonner's death remained ongoing.
