A 21-year-old woman found dead in a Melbourne apartment block has been identified as Jayda Allen Bonner. Her family had raised concerns about her safety with police just six weeks prior to her death.
A 21-year-old woman found dead in a Melbourne apartment block has been identified by her family as Jayda Allen Bonner. A homicide investigation is underway, with police having arrested a 60-year-old man who was later released.
Jayda Allen Bonner was described by her aunt, Kellie Carter-Bell, as a "gentle soul with a heart of gold".
"[She] would do anything to help anybody," Kellie Carter-Bell said on Saturday.
Ms Carter-Bell said Jayda was a Yagera woman with family in Queensland. The family had recently raised concerns with police about Jayda's safety.
"The really horrible, horrible thing is that the system's so broken that about six weeks ago, we begged for their help," Ms Carter-Bell said.
"We begged for their help, and because we were ringing them and not Jayda, their attitude was, 'Well, what do you want us to do?'"
Victoria Police did not respond to the family's claim. A spokesperson said they could not comment while an investigation was underway.
A 60-year-old man was arrested and interviewed nearby after a crime scene was established in Carlton, but has since been released. Forensic detectives were seen removing evidence from the complex on Saturday.
Ms Carter-Bell said she wanted the community to see Ms Allen Bonner's picture so they could understand her story.
"We are absolutely devastated," she said. "We need people to know that the system is so broken," she said.
