A small Victorian town is reeling after a violent attack on a local federal MP, with residents speaking out about the suspect's background and their own fears for safety.

A 43-year-old man, Brendan Nugent, has been charged with attacking Helen Haines outside her electorate office. He has been absent from his home in Tarrawingee since his arrest on Monday afternoon.

Nugent's home, understood to be owned by his family, stands in stark contrast to the well-kept homes and gardens surrounding it. Neighbours described the property as overgrown and neglected, with empty beer bottles and slab cartons scattered around the verandah and sheds.

Residents said they had grown to fear Nugent, who they claimed was a source of disturbance in the quiet town. One person said the night after his arrest was their first good sleep in seven years.
