A 16-year-old boy has been charged with multiple offences after allegedly hitting a pedestrian with a stolen vehicle in Melbourne's CBD. The incident occurred on Flinders Street on Sunday, leaving a 57-year-old woman hospitalised with non-life-threatening injuries.
A 16-year-old boy has been charged with multiple offences after allegedly hitting a pedestrian with a stolen vehicle in Melbourne's CBD.
Police say the teenager was driving erratically on Flinders Street on Sunday when he struck a 57-year-old woman, who was hospitalised with non-life-threatening injuries.
Chaos in the CBD
The incident occurred at about 10:45am, with witnesses telling police they were forced to jump out of the way to avoid the car as it drove down Flinders Street.
The chaos unfolded as thousands of people were running in the Melbourne Marathon on a route that passed by Flinders Street Station at the Swanston Street end.
Police say the boy was driving along tram tracks in a stolen Ford Escape, which was taken from a Cranbourne South business on Sunday morning.
The teenager allegedly performed a U-turn outside Flinders Street Station where police drew their firearms, before turning down Flinders Lane and hitting multiple parked cars.
Charges and arrest
The boy was later arrested by police at Albert Park.
Victoria Police said the incident was not an act of terrorism or a targeted attack.
The 16-year-old has been charged with reckless conduct endanger serious injury, drive manner dangerous, drive at speed dangerous, unlicensed driving, careless driving, fail to have proper control of vehicle, fail to render assistance, theft of motor vehicle and handle stolen goods.
The boy was remanded to appear at a children's court later today.
