A tragic incident at a popular tourist destination has resulted in the closure of the local reserve over the long weekend. A man died on Friday afternoon after falling while climbing onto a rock at the summit of a volcanic formation located 75 kilometres north-west of Melbourne.
According to Victoria Police, the man fell just before 1pm. "Despite the efforts of several off-duty medical professionals at the scene, the man was unable to be revived and was declared deceased at the scene," a police spokesperson said.
The incident has prompted the closure of the reserve, with the Macedon Ranges Shire Council citing a medical incident as the reason. The reserve was closed on Friday and will remain so on Saturday, September 26.
The closure comes during a long weekend for many Victorians, with the Grand Final Eve public holiday on Friday making the AFL Grand Final weekend a three-day break. Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
