Carlton defender Wade Derksen has been suspended for the first three games of next AFL season after being charged with high-range drink-driving.

The 25-year-old was allegedly found to have blown more than three times the legal limit during a roadside breath test in Jabiru in the Northern Territory late last month, with a reading of 0.174. His licence was suspended pending a court appearance next month.

As a result, Derksen has been suspended for all preseason games and up to round three of the AFL season next year. Carlton general manager of football Chris Davies expressed disappointment in Derksen's actions, saying: "While we acknowledge the upcoming legal process will carry its own penalty, Wade's conduct falls well below the standards we expect."

Davies added that Derksen was aware of the club's disappointment and would continue to receive support throughout this period as he takes full responsibility for his actions: "Wade is fully aware how disappointed we are in what occurred. We will continue to support him throughout this period as he takes full responsibility for his actions."

Derksen joined Carlton at the start of the season after being de-listed by GWS at the end of last year and played 15 games for the Blues this season.

In related news, Carlton's Lachie Cowan has been suspended for two games after an investigation into his use of an illicit substance last weekend.
