Kardinia Park Drama: Cats Conquer Saints, But Holmes Injury Casts Shadow as King Nears Comeback

Geelong secured a crucial victory over St Kilda to solidify their finals contention, but the win was overshadowed by a potentially serious ankle injury to star Max Holmes. Meanwhile, a losing St Kilda eagerly anticipates the long-awaited return of key forward Max King to bolster their ailing season.

Geelong secured a vital 27-point victory over St Kilda on Thursday night, triumphing 15.12 (102) to 11.9 (75) to end a three-match losing streak and strengthen their bid for an AFL finals berth. However, the jubilant mood at Kardinia Park was significantly dampened by a concerning ankle injury to dynamic midfielder Max Holmes in the final quarter, with initial fears of a serious syndesmosis.

Injury Woes Mount for Cats as Holmes Goes Down

Holmes, a pivotal speedster for the Cats, was visibly in distress after his right leg twisted underneath him late in the match. He was helped off the ground and later seen on crutches with his leg encased in a protective boot, leaving the club awaiting scans to determine the full extent of the damage. Coach Chris Scott acknowledged the gravity of the situation, remarking, "They won't know until they've had a decent look at it, but it was pretty clear that he couldn't come back on, so that's always my measure in the immediate aftermath." He added, "There has been that (ankle syndesmosis) suggestion but I covered my ears, to be honest. I'll just wait to see what it is and deal with it when we know."

The potential loss of Holmes compounds an already challenging injury list for Geelong, who are currently without star key forward Jeremy Cameron. Cameron recently underwent surgery to repair an AC joint and is anticipated to be sidelined for four to six weeks. "Obviously it's frustrating, but it is the game," Scott commented on the mounting injuries. "If you asked me a couple of weeks ago who do you really not want to lose, Cameron and Holmes would be up there." Further adding to the concerns, Shaun Mannagh also experienced hamstring tightness and was unable to finish the game.

Despite the fresh injury concerns, Geelong is set to welcome back several key players for their clash against Melbourne next week. Mark Blicavs, Jake Kolodjashnij, and Jack Martin are all expected to return after being strategically rested against the Saints. Tanner Bruhn could also make his comeback after recovering from a neck injury.

Saints Eye King's Return Amidst Losing Streak

For St Kilda, the defeat means they could drop out of the wildcard places by the end of the round, continuing their challenging season. The Saints' long-standing hoodoo at Kardinia Park also persists, having now lost 14 consecutive games at the venue, with their last victory dating back to 1999.

However, a significant boost is on the horizon for the Saints with the highly anticipated return of spearhead Max King. After a two-year absence plagued by a raft of injury setbacks, King has all but completed his conditioning program and is almost certain to feature in his first AFL game in over two years against North Melbourne next round. St Kilda coach Ross Lyon expressed his excitement, stating, "Saints fans, get ready for him playing. Yeah, he'll be playing. He's flying, to be honest. He's got to get through the week but he's in pretty good nick and he's keen to play, and that's exciting for us." Lyon also indicated that ruck-forward Tom De Koning is a chance to return from a rib injury for the Kangaroos encounter.

Match Highlights and Standout Performances

In the game itself, Geelong demonstrated a dominant opening, kicking the first four goals and maintaining control for much of the contest. Debutant Jay Polkinghorne impressed up forward for the Cats, kicking two goals, filling the void left by Cameron. Midfielders Bailey Smith (35 disposals) and Jhye Clark (25 disposals) were instrumental, while Gryan Miers contributed three goals on return.

For St Kilda, despite the loss, ruckman Rowan Marshall delivered a monumental performance, tallying 33 disposals, 12 clearances, two goals, and a club-record 26 contested possessions. Young Saints Mattaes Phillippou (28), Darcy Wilson (29), and Hugo Garcia (30) also showed promise with busy displays.
