The Melbourne Storm’s aspirations of securing an NRL finals berth have suffered a devastating blow with star five-eighth Cameron Munster ruled out for at least a month to undergo knee surgery.

Munster, 31, is scheduled for an operation to repair a cartilage injury, a setback that could potentially sideline him for the remainder of the regular season. The club confirmed the news on Tuesday, stating that the Queensland Maroons captain will immediately begin a rehabilitation program with the Storm’s medical staff.

A Severe Blow to Finals Hopes

The timing of the injury could not be worse for Melbourne. With only six rounds and a bye remaining in the regular season, the Storm are locked in a desperate battle to claw their way into the top eight. Currently sitting in 10th place on 20 points, they remain four points adrift of the finals-paying positions, largely due to a damaging seven-game losing streak earlier in the season.

Despite these struggles, a gritty 22-18 victory over the Gold Coast Titans last weekend—sealed by a dramatic 78th-minute try from Nick Meaney—had kept their postseason dreams alive. The win also marked a historic milestone, representing the club’s 500th victory in the NRL since their inception in 1998.

Wishart Set to Step Up

With Munster sidelined, coach Craig Bellamy faces the daunting task of reshaping his spine ahead of a crucial Friday night blockbuster against the third-placed Sydney Roosters.

Munster was rested for last week's clash against the Titans after a grueling season that included 15 club appearances and leading Queensland in all three State of Origin matches. In his absence, 26-year-old utility Tyran Wishart stepped into the halves. Wishart is now the front-runner to secure the starting playmaker role for the high-stakes encounter against the Roosters, as the Storm look to keep their season alive against formidable opposition.
