Fire Destroys Prestige Car Workshop in Airport West
A fire has destroyed a prestige car workshop in Airport West, Melbourne's north-west, with firefighters battling for over two hours to bring the blaze under control. The cause of the fire is being investigated and treated as suspicious by police.
Firefighters have battled for more than two hours to control a blaze inside a car workshop in Airport West early this morning. The fire, which destroyed the Prestige Autoworks on King Street, is being treated as suspicious by police.
There were several calls to Triple Zero just after 1am reporting explosions inside the workshop. Firefighters arrived within seven minutes to find the brick building fully alight, with flames spreading through the roof.
"Due to structural collapse, firefighters wearing breathing apparatus were forced to conduct a defensive attack," a Fire Rescue Victoria spokesperson said.
More than 50 firefighters were involved in battling the blaze, with three aerial appliances brought in to assist. It took more than two hours to bring the fire under control.
A community warning was issued for smoke in the surrounding area, and paramedics were called to the scene, but there have been no reports of injuries. A Victoria Police spokesperson said no one was believed to have been inside the auto workshop when the fire began.
The police spokesperson said the cause of the fire was still being investigated, but it was being treated as suspicious. "Due to structural damage, investigations at the scene will continue when it is safe to do so," they said.
Police are urging anyone who witnessed the incident, had vision, or any other information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
