Four individuals are facing charges following a violent early morning confrontation near Melbourne's iconic Flinders Street Station, which left two people seriously injured. The incident, involving a machete, escalated from a verbal dispute and resulted in a significant police response in the heart of the city.
The chaotic scenes unfolded at approximately 5:00 AM on Sunday at the intersection of Elizabeth and Flinders streets, a busy thoroughfare even in the pre-dawn hours. According to authorities, a verbal argument between two females quickly spiralled out of control as members of their respective groups became involved.
A spokesperson for local law enforcement described the rapid escalation of the event. "The incident escalated, and one male, brandishing a machete, pursued two other males. He allegedly slashed both individuals, causing serious injuries to the hand of one and the arm of the other."
In the aftermath, six people, ranging in age from 16 to 23, were apprehended by police in connection with the brawl. Following extensive investigation, four of these individuals have been formally charged with various offences. Notably, police confirmed that all four charged individuals were out on bail at the time of the alleged incident.
Among those charged is a 17-year-old male from the Brimbank area. He faces serious accusations, including intentionally causing injury in circumstances of gross violence, affray, possession of a prohibited weapon, and drug offences. A 19-year-old man from Bacchus Marsh and a 16-year-old female from the Banyule area were both charged with affray, a public order offence involving a fight in a public place.
Furthermore, a 23-year-old man from Laverton was charged with theft in relation to the incident. Both the 16-year-old female and the 23-year-old male have been granted bail and are scheduled to appear in court at a later date to face their charges.
During the ongoing investigation, a 17-year-old girl was issued a caution for drug possession, while another young woman who was also questioned by police was subsequently released without charge. The investigation remains active, and authorities are appealing to any members of the public who may have witnessed the altercation or possess further information to come forward and assist with their enquiries.
