A week-long search operation on the Goulburn River for missing kayaker Shane Wilson has concluded, leaving his family heartbroken and desperate for answers. Authorities expressed grave concerns for the 53-year-old, whose kayak capsized last Saturday.
A week-long, intensive search operation on the Goulburn River for missing kayaker Shane Wilson has officially concluded, leaving his family heartbroken and desperate for answers. Authorities have expressed grave concerns for the 53-year-old, who is presumed drowned after his kayak capsized last Saturday.
Mr. Wilson was last seen on Saturday, July 18, when he went fishing from his kayak on the Goulburn River. Witnesses on the riverbank raised the alarm after his vessel overturned, sparking a multi-agency search effort that spanned a week.
Family's Desperate Plea
Melissa Teague, Mr. Wilson's sister, voiced her profound disappointment and anguish at the decision to scale back the recovery efforts. "I'm angry," Ms. Teague stated, her voice heavy with grief. "It feels like the search is being scaled back before we've had the chance to bring Shane home, and that's devastating for us."
Ms. Teague revealed the family had been told to prepare for the harrowing possibility that her brother's body might never be found. "Hearing those words while we're desperately waiting for answers was absolutely heartbreaking," she shared, describing the immense emotional toll on the family.
Extensive Search Efforts
Emergency Services were immediately dispatched to the river on July 18 following the alarm. The extensive search involved personnel from Victoria Police, the Country Fire Authority (CFA), Lifesaving Victoria, and the State Emergency Service (SES). Despite their combined efforts, Mr. Wilson could not be located.
An SES spokesperson previously indicated that Mr. Wilson was known to be a strong swimmer. However, the Goulburn River was reportedly flowing quite rapidly at the time of the incident, and tragically, Mr. Wilson was not wearing a life jacket. Police officials confirmed they had maintained contact with the family throughout the search, providing updates on developments.
While the active search has concluded, a police spokesperson indicated that officers would revisit the area if any new information or developments emerged, providing a glimmer of hope for the grieving family.
Cherished Memories of a 'Brudda'
For Melissa Teague, Shane was more than just an older brother – he was her best friend. Thirteen years her senior, he was a constant, loving presence in her life. "He always made time for me," she recalled fondly. "We'd cook potato gems together and watch all my favourite cartoons. He'd play with me on the trampoline, teach me things, and when he was painting around the house, he'd hand me a little pot of water and a paintbrush so I thought I was helping."
She never called him Shane; he was always 'brudda,' a nickname that stuck from her childhood inability to pronounce 'brother.' Ms. Teague reminisced about their daily phone calls, often while Mr. Wilson was driving home from work, complaining about Melbourne traffic. "Those everyday conversations are what I miss the most. He wasn't just my big brother… he was my best friend," she concluded, expressing the profound void left by his disappearance.
