AFL Sensation: North Melbourne Parts Ways With Alastair Clarkson After Four Seasons
North Melbourne has cut short Alastair Clarkson's coaching tenure after four years at Arden Street. Despite showing signs of on-field recovery, the Kangaroos have opted to seek a new direction in their pursuit of finals football.
In a move that has sent shockwaves through the AFL world, North Melbourne has parted ways with senior coach Alastair Clarkson after four seasons at Arden Street.
Despite being contracted until the end of the 2027 season, the club's leadership chose to terminate the four-time premiership coach's contract early following a thorough review of the team's trajectory.
A Search for Greater Success
North Melbourne president Sonja Hood and general manager of football Todd Viney addressed the media to explain the decision, emphasizing that while Clarkson had stabilized the club, the hierarchy demanded a quicker return to top-flight success.
"We asked Alastair to give our club stability and strength and help return us to the top of the AFL ladder," Hood stated. "Four years later, we have created an environment where our staff and players want to be at our club. This is a testament to the culture Alastair has helped create and the belief that he has built in this group."
However, Hood made it clear that patience had ultimately run thin. "Although we have clearly made progress and won more games, we won't shy away from our desire to want more from this talented group."
The Record: Gradual Improvement Not Enough
Clarkson arrived at Arden Street with massive expectations, having previously guided Hawthorn to a golden era of dominance. However, translating that success to a rebuilding Kangaroos outfit proved to be a monumental task. Over his 82 games in charge, North Melbourne registered just 20 wins.
His year-by-year record reflects a slow climb out of the AFL basement:
- 2023: 3 wins, 10 losses
- 2024: 3 wins, 20 losses
- 2025: 5 wins, 17 losses (1 draw)
- 2026: 9 wins, 14 losses
While the nine wins in 2026 represented the club's best season since 2019 and secured a 14th-place finish, it was ultimately deemed insufficient for a board hungry to break a decade-long finals drought. The Kangaroos have not featured in September action since 2016, when Brad Scott was at the helm.
What Lies Ahead for Arden Street
Clarkson took over a club at its lowest ebb, following consecutive wooden spoons in 2021 and 2022, as well as a second-to-last finish in 2020. While he leaves the playing list in a significantly healthier state than he found it, the search now begins for a successor who can unlock the potential of the club's highly rated young talent and guide them back into the top eight.
